Kernicterus is a rare but serious disease that affects babies soon after they are born. It is especially tragic because Kernicterus can be avoided. This is developed from jaundice. I did not know this word until we had Elizabeth, she looked a little yellow when she was born, although she has been passing lots of things but she still did not pass the test. I remember I have to take her back to the hospital after 1 week, actually that was two days after we went home since I have a C section. Then the doctor has to get blood from her tiny heel. I could not bear to look at it so I was waiting at the hall way but I could still hear her crying.

I think it is good that the doctors were so responsible to help with the children to prevent Kernicterus. Children who develop Kernicterus likely are victims of medical malpractice. While some children who have Kernicterus can do well, others will have severe deficits that require a lifetime of care. So although some people say that lots of Asian born has yellow skin, you should not be worried about it, I am so glad that we had all the formal tests to prevent further illness.
